Original Paper : The effects of thiamine on anti-fatigue during exercise
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find the effect of the complex treatment of thiamine and glucose on anti-fatigue during exercise. Each subject went through three cross-over designs: placebo, thiamine, and thiamine plus glucose supplementation trials. Thiamine treatment of weight per 10mg was divided three times a day for a week, was taken 30 minutes after the meal. In case of thiamine and glucose complex treatment, thiamine treatment was treated same way as sole treamtnet. Total glucose intake was 60g where 10% glucose powder was dissolved in 150ml water to be taken 15 minutes before the exercise and during the 30 minute exercise was taken every 15 minutes. The bicycle ergometer exercise was performed at 70% of maximal oxygen uptake in exercise intenstity where 45 minutes of exercise was performed at 50rpm and after 45minutes was increased bicycle pedal to 70rpm to lead to exhaustion. Compared to placebo treatment, lactate concentration was significantly decreased in thiamine treatment and thiamine and glucose complex treatment during 15 minutes of exercise and 30 minutes of recovery. In addition, ammonia concentration had same result as lactate concentration did. Compared to placebo treatment, exhaustion time was significantly increased in thiamine sole treatment and thiamine and glucose complex treatment. To sum up the following, thiamine intake during the exercise positively benefits carbohydrate metabolism in a way that will decrease lactate concentration, ammonia concentration and RPE to increase the exhaustion time. With glucose intake, it can bring synergistic effect.
